Fun Sportz the official GoPro distributor gave us an opportunity to test out the GoPro new flagship Hero 7 Black action camera.
The Hero 7 Black, which replaces the now discontinued Hero 6 Black, comes with new ‘Hypersmooth’ electronic image stabilization, improved audio, live-streaming to sites like Facebook, and a fancy new time-lapse mode called ‘TimeWarp’.
The Hero 7 Black currently has the best in-camera video stabilization in any action camera we ever used. Gimbal like stability without a gimbal!
I tested most of the features and functions during the GoPro Hero 7 preview at Sunway Lagoon, the Hero 7 Black looks identical to its predecessor from the outside, but in the hardware terms, the only real differences are its new black paint job and a redesigned microphone membrane, which apparently provides more natural bass tones and brighter mids.
There are five new features, compared to the Hero 6 Black. The biggest one is what GoPro is calling ‘Hypersmooth’ stabilization, which is a souped-up version of the electronic image stabilization we saw on its previous flagship and now works in its 4K/60fps mode. Its still digital rather than optical stabilization, though GoPro claims it’ll let you capture gimbal-like video “without the expense or hassle of a motorized gimbal”.

Hypersmooth has a new time-lapse mode called TimeWarp. This is similar to a standard timelapse, where the camera takes still photos at regular intervals then plays them back to give the impression of a scene being played in fast-forward. Only this time it adds smooth stabilization to let you create first-person “magic carpet rides” through journeys like bike rides.
The Hero 7 Black is also the first GoPro that can live stream. You can be able to live stream to sites like Facebook, and YouTube.
And the final two changes are a new ‘SuperPhoto’ feature for stills and a refreshed UI. ‘SuperPhoto’ is GoPro’s attempt to replicate the intelligent auto modes which can automatically recognize scenes and apply the right camera settings.
In addition to recognising scenes, GoPro says the Hero 7 Black will be able detect faces and smiles, and intelligent enough to clear some wrinkles on the face when you smile.
The User Interphase (UI) tweaks are relatively minor, but include a new ‘short clips’ button for limiting the length of recordings to 15 or 30 seconds (in case you want to pass the camera round to others without the fear of filling up your memory card) and these designed are based on data, GoPro’s collected about how people use its cameras. Took a bit time to get use to the UI.
Aside from these new features, the Hero 7 Black’s specs are largely unchanged from its predecessor. It uses the same size sensor and lens as before, and records video at similar bit-rates.
It can also shoot 12-megapixel photos (in HDR and Raw), is waterproof to 10m, and can record slo-mo in 120fps or 240fps at 1080p.
We were put to the test to capture our day at Sunway Lagoon and use the GoPro Quik app to come out a 1-minute video.
Verdict: Great new features Hypersmooth TimeWarp! With only this feature, I will run to the camera store and get one 7 Black! plus the gimble like stabilization probably never will have a bike review that is jerky and shaky anymore even I mount it parts that are vibrating!
