I never been able to fly a drone before, my first time flying a China drone lasted like 1 minute, as I flew it at a playground and the drone went sideways and hit a tree, then crash right in the drain. Bye bye Tarantula!
Then came John bringing his DJI Phantom 3, so he showed me how to fly a drone, I must say DJI really made it easy to fly a drone. With in minutes, I could fly the Phantom 3. So actually by now you will be wondering why I have the sudden interest to fly a drone? The reason is ……. because of the new DJI Mavic Pro, which we have ordered and adding to our list of gadget for i-MotoTV. Besides our GoPro Hero’s, the Mavic Pro will give us another angle of footage on our videos like never before.
Many reasons why we choose the DJI Mavic instead of the GoPro Karma, which also launched recently on September 19th, and after a week later DJI announced the Mavic Pro.
Both are fold-able drones , both have or may have front facing view cameras instead of the conventional bottom placement camera the Phantom. The Karma and Mavic can be packed in a bag although the later is much smaller and more compact.
Karma does not come with a action camera, but you can mount any GoPro on it and the GRIP, a 6 axis gimbal can be detached and use it as a hand held. From DJI you have OSMO. But unfortunately the GoPro Karma will only arrive in Malaysia next year.
Why we choose Mavic Pro?
The Mavic Pro comes with a 4k camera and the Mavic can be programmed to follow and track, which will be great for me as i go on my solo test rides and group rides.
DSC World Sdn Bhd, the authorised distributor of DJI in Malaysia, let us have a first look at the Mavic Pro, and we so impressed with the DJI Mavic Pro was so small yet powerful drone, just fold it and put it in your bag or a larger pouch.
Now we can capture aerial moment and also get some selfie shots. It is DJI’s most sophisticated flying cameras ever. 24 high-performance computing cores, an all-new transmission system with a 4.3mi (7km) *range, 5 vision sensors, and a 4K camera stabilized by a 3-axis mechanical gimbal, are at your command with just a push of your thumb or a tap of your finger. Taking an indoor video also can be done without GPS.
On a drone, the most likely source of a problem is a sensor not working exactly as it should. The Mavic has two of each key sensor. If one goes wrong, the other kicks in to take its place.
Maybe all you want to do is grab a quick dronie, set up tracking to shoot a friend, or even just head skywards for a quick flight. All you need is your phone.
Like us, a beginner pilot, wont find trouble flying in a straight line because they aren’t familiar with joysticks, which then makes shooting smooth video tricky but Mavic has TapFly function, means you can just tap where you want to go and the Mavic will fly smoothly in that direction, so you can focus on controlling the gimbal and capturing photos and video. Flying really can be that easy.
The Mavic acts on your every instruction almost instantly. Whether you want to shoot a slow, graceful flowing shot, or get your blood pumping at 65kph speeds in Sport Mode.
The Mavic is only 1/6th the size of the Phantom 4 but this reduction in size doesn’t mean a reduction in flight time. The Mavic actually flies much longer than you would expect from its compact size. It is capable of reaching an absolute maximum flight time of 27 minutes and a claimed distance of 13km (but dont try to go that far) due to its powerful, high-efficiency motors.
Every photo you take with the Mavic can be as big as 12 megapixels. Combined with an image sensor that has been expertly tuned for aerial images, all you need to do is find the perfect subject. You can even flip the camera 90° for portrait oriented shots, just like you do with your phone. If you are as concerned about editing as you are about composition, you can capture every photo in Adobe DNG RAW to give you all the editing power you need to turn any photo into a work of art.
Too bad the unit from DSC was unable to fly but after running through all the other reviews, I must say its a must have!
Now we just cant wait for our delivery of our unit! Hopefully by end of November we can our unit. Mean while we hope to get DJI Osmo and Phantom 4 for a review in the meanwhile.
