Indonesia Teenager Makes Clean Sweep at MSBK Round 1
Despite facing the handicap of a ‘borrowed’ bike, Indonesia’s 16-year riding sensation Surya Narayana overcame the shortcomings of his Honda CBR250R machine to score a double victory in the opening round of the 2018 Pirelli Malaysia Superbike Championship (MSBK) at Sepang International Circuit (SIC) today.
Surya, who lives in Malang, East Java and competes in the Indonesia Racing Series in Sentul, came to Sepang after being offered to compete in the Super 250 class on a race bike prepared by AZ Motor Performance Racing and offered at a ‘special price’.
“I would like to thank the team for borrowing me the bike for race. Despite paying a very special low price, they prepared the bike very well. This race suit I am wearing today is also borrowed. The races were very tough today; but I am happy that I won it. Hopefully, I can go all the way and win the championship,” said Surya, who competed in three rounds last year with mixed results.
“There was a few podium wins last year; and I truly enjoyed the competition. Hence, returning this year for a full season,” said Surya, who thanked Luth Harith Erwan’s father for his support in managing his race at the circuit over the weekend.
Surya won Race 1, which was competed on a wet track following an early morning shower in Sepang; beating Luth Harith to second place and defending champion Muhammad Aiman Tahiruddin taking third place.
On a dry track in Race 3, the trio competed for the top three places again until a last lap incident on the last turn that saw Luth and Erwan colliding against each other; giving Surya a clear run to the checkered flag; completing the eight-lap contest in 22 minutes 45.699 second.
The incident allowed Muhammad Amirul Affiq, a privateer and Muhammad Danial Ahmad Shahril who is a product of SIC Junior ZK Racing Team to finish second and third respectively. Another SIC Junior ZK Racing Team rider, Daniel el Fahim took fourth place.
