The all-new model features many new cutting- edge technology and design, dubbed as “The Scalpel,” the sharp KTM 790 DUKE has arrived. The KTM 790 DUKE is fully CBU and priced from RM 64,800 (basic selling price with 0% GST, not on-the-road).
Dubbed as “The Scalpel” the new KTM 790 DUKE combines thrill-a-minute performance yet is practical for the daily commute due to its excellent ergonomics. Riders can look forward to slicing through traffic on the way to work, carving canyons or the racetrack on weekends. Because the new KTM 790 DUKE is “Ready to Race.”
At the heart of the all-new KTM 790 DUKE is the all-new 799cc LC8c DOHC parallel-Twin which features a 75o crankpin offset, to mimic its bigger brethren’s 1290 cc 75o V-Twins. As the LC8c name suggests – “Liquid-cooled, 8-valve, compact” – KTM engineers chose the parallel-Twin format for its compactness and simplicity hence better weight distribution and greater weight savings for a high power-to-weight ratio. The new engine produces 105 bhp at 9,000 RPM and 87 Nm of torque at 8,000. There are two balancer shafts to quell vibration for a smoother ride.
Unlike forged camshafts, those in the LC8c are assembled to save weight. Furthermore, the cam followers are DLC (diamond-like carbon) coated to lower friction and enhance durability. A hydraulic cam tensioner ensures optimum timing chain tension for precise valve timing.
The six-speed gearbox also has KTM’s trademarked PASC (Power Assist Slipper Clutch) installed. The PASC increases clutch pressure while acceleration, allowing the cable actuated clutch lever to be operated with a single finger. On deceleration or hard braking, the clutch pressure is relieved slightly to avoid rear wheel chatter for smoother and confident cornering.
The new exhaust system is routed extremely close to the chassis for exceptional ground clearance. It is also designed for distinctive acoustics. The exhaust canister is shielded for passenger comfort.
As a result of all the weight saving measures, the KTM 790 DUKE weighs in at a svelte 169 kg, dry
Another aspect of KTM’s motorcycles complying to our corporate “Ready to Race” mantra is the suspension. The KTM 790 DUKE uses specially- developed WP 43mm open-cartridge upside-down forks. Progressive springs ensure smooth operation throughout their 140mm stroke. A WP steering damper keeps front end movements in check. The rear suspension is a gas-assisted WP shock absorber.
Additionally, the rigidity of the cast aluminium triple clamps has been finely tuned to match the flex of the forks to deliver the all-important feedback and outstanding handling characteristics to the rider.
Our engineers designed the chassis to provide a quick-steering rake angle of 24o and 98 mm of trail. Furthermore, the handlebar is adjustable for four positions.
Complementing the hard parts is the suite of intuitive electronics package, making the KTM 790 DUKE the most technologically comprehensive 800cc motorcycle. These include Ride-by-Wire throttle (RbW), lean angle sensitive Motorcycle Traction Control (MTC), Cornering ABS, Motor Slip Regulation (MSR) for controlling engine braking, and Quickshifter+ for both upshifts and downshifts with auto-blip function. Also, as with the latest KTMs, the KTM 790 DUKE features a full-colour TFT display which could be expanded with the KTM MY RIDE smartphone integration.
Enhancing its image as the cutting-edge motorcycle, is its cutting-edge design which will surely become the standard bearer for its class. The KTM 790 DUKE has the split LED lighting which first made its debut on the KTM 1290 Super Duke R and KTM 390 Duke. The taillight and turn signals are integrated into the number plate holder to reduce bulk and present the “Ready to Race” attitude. As such, the entire section could be easily removed for racetrack duties.
