2015 Husqvarna Media off-road launch: Kuala Lumpur to Lulea, Sweden.
The journey to Lulea and back was my best international launch so far, this time was for 2015 Husqvarna Media off-road launch. My second time in Sweden, but this time the journey to Lulea, 722km from Stockholm, was way smoother than my first trip. Took three flights and a bus to reach Lulea. Left Kuala Lumpur (KLIA), Monday 8.55pm and reached Stockholm, Arlanda Airport (ARN), 7am Tuesday. 18 hours including transit in Bangkok Suvarnabhumi for three hours. Took a domestic flight from Arlanda Airport to Kallex Airport (LLA), flight one hour and five minutes after waiting in Arlanda Terminal 4 for three hours, lastly a 45 minute bus ride to reach Clarion Sense Hotel 11.30am Sweden time. Journey to Lulea took 25hours and 50minutes. Lulea is 100km from the North Pole. Clarion Sense Hotel, was very impressive venue for my 2 night stay in Lulea, I would give this Clarion Hotel a 6 star rating.
What surprise me was the sun that doesn’t go down, and doesn’t get dark this time of year, the perpetual midnight sun looms low over the horizon, and it’s casting a surreal orange glow, even at 3am, andeven when it rains the whole day darkness never fall. When we had our welcome cocktail and dinner at the 9th floor of the hotel it was sunny outside at 9pm. At 1am, the northern hemisphere night was bright, like a sunny afternoon in Malaysia.
The 2015 Husqvarna Media off-road launch day started with a 8am Media Conference by Husqvarna’s Product Manager, Federico Valentini, describing the 2015 model updates as following:
Updates at the front end.
New front axle, replaced by 26mm axle, for a more flex and give the rider more feedback and confidence while riding.
A shorter offset adds to more stability, and increased trail, rider gets a better front end feel.
New open type fork protectors, for easier maintenance and replacement of fork protectors.
That makes an overall front end lighter by 90 grams. 90 grams lighter may not seem much, you will feel it when you’re on the 10th lap and the finish line is just three corners away and both your arms are numb! A little bit reduced in weight here and there by Husqvarna R&D, lighter means more agility and better maneuverability.
At the rear, new linkage geometry, that is optimized and rising the rate, reduces the progressive curve, so rider gets a better control and stability on the track and trails.
The new machined linkage triangle is 40grams lighter, that adds to the overall weight reduction. Current weight reduction from front and rear end now stands at 130grams. The new 2015 models comes with new WP rear shocks that give a 4mm more stroke with the same wheel travel and a revised WP Shock set up and valving. At the sub frame comes with additional screw on the airbox side that improve the fitment of the subframe component.
The 2015 models gets new handguards for better impact resistance, new harder, more resistance seat cover that is more durable and firm for a more improve grip and comfort while riding in hard terrain.
New Neken handlebar and Husqvarna pad on the handlebars gives it a distinctive looks. New graphics that differentiates between Enduro models and Motorcross models.
Other components which are reduced in weight versus 2014 models are Pull Rod: -26grams, Rear Suspension: -15grams, WP 4CS left fork leg: -125grams, WP 4CS right fork Leg: -52grams, Front wheel axle and Spacer: -40grams, Fork Protectors: -50grams, Lower bearing triple clamp seal: -22grams and Steering stem bolt: -8grams. Total weight saving of 338grams compare to last year’s model.
New Dunlop MX52 tyres are factory fitted, comes with “Block-within-a block” design, which were developed in Supercross and Motocross.
Husqvarna R&D has carefully designed ergonomics for the 2015 models, maintains the chromium molybdenum steel frame, standard handlebar mounted map switch, CNC machined triple clamps, DID black-anodised wheels, all 4-strokes comes with Electric Start, Keihin EMS and 44mm throttle body and Brembo hydraulic cluctch.
After the presentation at 9am sharp the bus took us on a one hour journey to Pitea’s MX track, Piteå Motorstadion. The day started without any sign of the sun in the horizon. As weather forecast rain looming for todays ride.
26 Husqvarna bikes were lined up and waiting for us at Piteå Motorstadion. Each journalist gets 30minute on each models. Everyone was frantic to get their bikes.
Husqvarna models ridden:
Heavy downpour in the later part of the Riding Day, I did’nt get to ride the TC300 and FE 450.
Husqvarna Motorcycles sure is of their proud Swedish heritage. After 112 years of operation, you can sense the satisfaction of the marque’s return to their homeland.
