The “traditional” adventure bike market covered with its ubiquitous R 1200 GS/Adventure boxer twin variants, BMW has certainly taken notice of what it calls the “adventure sports” segment. This spinoff category consists of bikes that have more sportbike bloodlines than off-roading intent— and the one bike that exemplifies the class better than any other is Ducati’s very successful Multistrada 1200. BMW decided it could more easily get into the game with its four-cylinder S 1000 platform, resulting in the new S 1000 XR. and you will get XR-tra, performance and great handling for smaller size riders.
My test XR has ABS (anti-lock brakes that also happen to be linked), Dynamic ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment), ASC (Automatic Stability Control), DTC (Dynamic Traction Control), heated grips (which we never use), cruise control and Gear Shift Assist Pro with handguards installed.
The height is tall so makes me look clumsy while im stopping and tilting the bike upright before i start the engine.
My pleasure began at the starter button, which is integrated into the kill switch. Nice work, BMW. The bike felt tall, but that’s to be expected in this category. I worked this bike through KL traffic after a 20 minute detour, because my buddy on my MT-09 rode pass me before I plan to turn to Ulu Yam instead of just the boring Karak highway to Gotong Jaya and it felt like any other large motorcycle. I finally eased it onto the twisty Ulu Yam and BatangKali route, and ride the XR to 80 percent of its capability and we like what we got! The XR hads loads of power to offer. Since the traffic was kind of heavy getting there, I kept myself occupied by fiddling with some of the suspension settings. At each stop, I was switching between Road (soft, cushy touring) and Dynamic (firmer, good for twisties) settings, once you choose the preset just pop the clutch to confirm your selection.
Utilizing the same 999cc, DOHC, liquid-cooled inline-four engine as the S 1000 R naked bike introduced last year means the XR’s powerplant is good for a claimed 160 hp
Imagine riding a sports tourer like superbike or a supernaked ! The XR just make u feel like that. I love the Road Mode it handles the Batangkali route tarmac like it just been resurface, all the bumps are absorbed by the preset Road Mode. We tried the Dynamic Pro mode at Karak and we did ride it past 210km/h but in highspeed corners the front suspension started to wobble a slight bit.
