The Terengganu-born riders taking part in the 2018 PETRONAS AAM Malaysian Cub Prix Championship came out strong in their home race to completely dominate the proceedings at Round 8 in Kuala Terengganu.
In the CP150 premiere class, championship leader Ahmad Afif Amran snared another 25 points with a convincing victory in front of a delighted home crowd.
The PETRONAS Sprinta Yamaha-CKJ rider, poleman for the 20-lap race, took immediate control when he dove into the holeshot at the start of the race. At a 0.9km track that called for a light touch on the brakes and a smooth flowing riding style, Afif proved that he had both qualities in spade as he coolly absorbed the pressure from an aggressive Kasma Daniel Kasmayuddin.
However, Afif rode a superb defensive race and sped to the win with 13’40.445s. PETRONAS Sprinta Yamaha Maju Motor’s Mohd Akid Aziz trailed him to the podium in second place while Kasma Daniel barely made it to the last spot on the podium after making several costly mistakes during the 20-lap race.
“This was a very tough race because Kasma and Akid were very fast. Despite the width of this track, there are actually very few overtaking points. Kasma, in particular, was trying to overtake at almost every single corner. I had to rely on all my experience to stay one wheel ahead of him,” said Afif.
This latest win has increased Afif’s points collection to 160 points. Defending champion Kasma Daniel has a 49-point deficit in second place with 111 points.
